Worried About A Hacker Compromising Your Website?
From huge corporations to little mom and pop websites, everyone is worried about getting hacked. Small companies will often have no idea they’ve been hacked, and why.
If you do get hacked, it’s probably not by someone you know, and your website probably wasn’t even targeted. One of the most common hacks is link injections. Your website will get hacked and links to other sites will be secretly placed. The reason they do this is because the search engines will see it, and pass authority off to those websites. This will increase their search engine positions and create more revenue.
Check Your WordPress Plugins & Update Them
Chances are your website was probably built on the WordPress Framework and a few third party plugins are being used. WordPress and reputable plugins are constantly updating their code as hackers find exploits. This is why it’s important to check your WordPress for updates, and it’s very easy to do.
When you first log on to your WordPress backend, you will see a little red circle if you have one or more plugins that need updating.
Simply click the word “Plugins” and you will see the list of plugins you have available. Now most plugins have a free version and a paid version. The free versions won’t update automatically, so if you don’t want to do this every week consider purchasing a licence and help feed the family of the developer.
If you’re curious about why the plugin is being updated, they’ll show you a list of what this updates entails. This clearly shows that this plugin author is consistently working on the plugin to ensure security and other issues.
This client of mine chose not to pay the $34.00 license fee for this plugin, so it can’t even be updated. It’s OK not to pay, but it could lead to a lot of trouble down the road.
Visual Composer is a very popular pagebuilder plugin, and true we developers hate it because it helps ametuers build websites with little knowledge. And, it makes the site “heavy” and increases load time which can have a negative effect on your search rankings and user experience.
What If I Don’t Know If My Website Is WordPress?
This website makes it easy to see what you have, and if you’re running WordPress: WTS WordPress Theme Search.
If you run my website, they don’t know because I use my own custom themes. But they do know that I use WP Rocket as a plugin, but that’s all they know.
This tool comes in handy if you see another website you want your website to look like. You can buy the theme for under $100.00.
